SNP Enterprise Minister Jim Mather claimed in a Liberal Democrat debate today that an independent Scotland would not have shown the incompetence of the Irish Government in handling the economy.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat MSP for Glasgow Robert Brown said:
"This is an absolutely extraordinary statement from a senior SNP Minister.
"The SNP have spent the whole of the last decade extolling the virtues of the Irish approach. Their website still lists Ireland and in fact Iceland as examples of successful independent economies.
"In one ill-timed intervention, the Minister has blown the whole SNP strategy out of the water.
"I've never seen anything like it."
